I’ve just moved from Vimeo to self-hosting (to see $240 per year).
I thought I could get ARVE to do unmuted autoplay on Chrome (but I guess I can’t? If you know how, PLEASE share lol).
Because of this, I’d love to use lazyload for Chrome because it gives a visual clue to click play and watch the video. However, since Firefox and Edge doesn’t have this limitation, I would love them to use unmuted autoplay. As I understand it, you can’t choose autoplay if you’re using lazyload. Is there some way to get autoplay to work on Edge/Firefox but lazyload on Chrome?
I would really LOVE to do unmuted autoplay on Edge, Firefox, and Chrome — is this even possible without using Vimeo? I’ve been doing it the last year with Vimeo and it worked great.
Thanks in advance!!
I am actually not really up to speed on the state of autoplay but it’s kind of dead. First the mobile browsers and then the desktop browsers followed. I think it actually makes sense.
Mozilla has this article about it https://blog.mozilla.org/firefox/stop-video-autoplay/ they cite mental health and link to a article about a proposed bill that would actually outlaw autoplay and endless scrolling.
I can confirm in my tests a Vimeo and YouTube (sometimes?) iframe embeds is actually autoplaying on Chromium desktop where the video tag is prevented from. That is pretty unfair and I do not understand why. The iframe has a special allow=”autoplay …” attribute where you can have autoplay for now it seems so this is probably something Google is pushing to punish individuals with their simple HTML5 video files while they allow it for iframe embeds that are like like 90% YouTube and big cooperation embeds.
Long story short: Technically pretty much everything is possible so I could detect browsers and switch mode based on browsers but I do not like to, as things may change tomorrow and is actually even now based on your assumption that users run the default setting in Firefox, most will but again that may change tomorrow. I think you should just consider the fact that people who want to watch a video have to click/tap it. Go with muted autoplay and hope that even that works, as it may actually not ;). Edge is moving to Chromium as well so things will probably on pair with Chrome so when the switch becomes final those special things I would set for now would then be meaningless.
